Festivals Of The Caribbean Crop Over

The Crop Over Festival is a popular Barbadian festivals. It's an annual event which starts in May and ends in August with a festive street procession.

The Crop Over Festival which can be traced as far back as the 1780s, symbolises the end of the sugar cane harvesting season. The festival was initially terminated in 1940 due to a decline in sugar production in Barbados, but was revived in 1974. Since then, the festival has been through many changes which sought to showcase the talents of Barbadians.

The festival has grown to include weekly fetes and limes featuring traditional Barbadian food and music. There are also visual arts exhibitions, steel pan competitions and pan concerts, fairs, leisure cruises and private parties.

The Crop Over Opening Gala and Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes

This event is the official opening of the Crop Over Festival. It begins with a decorated cart parade which is a float parade through the streets. The occasion is used to crown and reward the top male and female sugar cane harvesters who are given the titles of King and Queen of the Crop respectively.

In addition, the last canes harvested are blessed by the leader of the Spiritual Baptists, Granville Williams and his church members. The group engages in extensive singing and prayers for the country and the sugar season that has past.

Calypso Music and Competitions

Calypso can be considered to be the music of Crop Over. Musicians from around the country and the Caribbean write and perform songs which are played on the radio, television and at Crop Over events.

Calypso tents feature calypsonians, comedians and other acts on a weekly basis and have become a staple of the festival. There are several singing competitions which judge tent members on the content, tempo and song arrangement to name a few of the categories.

One of the biggest calypso competitions of the season is the Pic-O-De-Crop. This competition features calypsonians singing two calypsos for the crown. The first prize is usually a new motor car, cash prizes and other awards from sponsors of the event. Red Plastic Bag (RPB), a beloved Barbadian calypsonian, walked away with the title in 2009. Other popular competitions inlude the Party Monarch competition, Sweet Soca Monarch and the Road March which is judged and awarded on the last day of Crop Over.

Children and Crop Over

Children also play an important part in the Crop Over Festival. There is a Junior Monarch competition which consists of children under the age of eighteen years singing calypsos. Children also participate in a Junior Kadooment, also known as Kiddies Kadooment. In this event, the younger ones parade and dance in costumes before judges.

The Last Lap Weekend

This weekend is the climax of the Crop Over Festival. It features the Pic-O-De-Crop competition on the Friday night; a Foreday Morning Jump-Up in the wee hours of Saturday morning; Bridgetown Market, which is a large fair focusing on local art, craft and talent takes place on Saturday and Sunday; Cohobbloot, a potpourri of Barbadian talent on Sunday night; and finally, Grand Kadooment on the Monday. This is the biggest event of the season and sees a procession of thousands of costumed revellers dancing through the streets to calypso music streaming from large music trucks.

Tourist Information On Spain

I have lived in Spain for 30 years, while running my business Valuvillas in the resort of Javea, and I can tell you most visitors to Spain hit the beaches of the Costas for a week or two, take in a flamenco Show and eat paella, before leaving and thinking that they have ticked Spain off their travel list. With five official languages, beach and skiing resorts, the most varied cuisine in Europe, Medieval towns and Islamic palaces, Spain deserves a much closer look than most people give it. As a European country with enlightened Visa requirements and a friendly population, an extended visit to Spain is an essential part of any trip to Europe.

When to Go

As a Mediterranean country surrounded by the sea, Spain is a year-round destination. Beach lovers will prefer the hot summer months, although the Canary Islands off Morocco have year-round sunshine, while skiers will prefer the winter. Most cultural spots can be visited at any time and are less crowded outside the traditional summer and Easter holidays. Spain's Catholic heritage means that many of its world famous fiestas are celebrated around the Easter period, especially in the aouth. A festival calendar can be found on the Spain Festivals website.

Where to Go

Spain can be roughly divided into four zones. In the North, there is a Celtic influence and the Pyrenees mountains keep the climate wet and cooler than the rest of the country. The east of Spain is dominated by the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona and the beach resorts along the coast all the way down to the Costa del Sol in the southeast. The center of Spain is dominated by the Capital city Madrid and the historical cities of Toledo and Salamanca. The south of Spain is a fascinating mixture of Islamic history and vibrant Andalusian and gypsy culture, including the famous bullfights and Flamenco dancing.

Traveling About

Spain's modern rail system is easy to use and economical for tourists. Timetables can be viewed and tickets booked on the Rail Europe website. Spain also boasts an extensive local and intercity bus network. ALSA has an extensive regional bus network and its timetables can be viewed on the ALSA website. For internal flights, travelers should look at the Vueling website. Renting a car in Spain is easy and Spain's extensive road network makes a hire car a great way to explore a region or the whole country.

A basic knowledge of Spanish is very useful when in Spain, even in areas, such as the Basque Country, where it is not the most widely spoken language. Few Spanish people outside the large cities and main resorts speak English. Spain is a very safe country to travel in with an efficient police force. Visitors should watch out for the standard tourist scams in resort areas and apply normal late night precautions in the cities. The Basque terrorist group ETA is no longer the force it once was and has been inactive in 2010, although it still threatens to bomb tourist resorts and major transport hubs in Spain.

While everybody has heard of paella and sangria, many of Spain's regional cuisines are still largely unknown to visitors. The Basque Country, Galicia and the North East in general is famous for its varied seafood, cider and fresh produce while the Pyrenees are home to hearty dishes, such as the bean-based stew Fabada Asturiana. The East of Spain is dominated by the famous Mediterranean diet, based on olive oil, fresh vegetables and fruit and seafood. Valencia is the true home of the famous seafood risotto called paella, although it can be found all over the country. The south of Spain is the home of tapas and jamon Serrano, the delicious cured ham that is found hanging in most Spanish bars. The inland Center of Spain is where the nation's famous saffron crop is grown. Its most famous dish is the cold tomato and cucumber soup called gazpacho.

Must See

The Camino de Santiago or St James' Way is the traditional pilgrimage route across the North East of Spain to the Galician city of Santiago de Compostela. It has grown to be one of the great pilgrimages of Europe and has a well organized and affordable netwoek of guesthouses and hostels along its route. Barcelona and Madid both vie to be the must visit city in Spain, although Barcelona with its mixture of beaches, vibrant, nightlife and mix of modren architecture and medieval districts probably edges first place. In the south, the Medieval city of Granada and nearby Islamic palaces of the Alhambra are the highlight, while the historic University city of Salamanca is the quintessential Spanish architecture and tapas destination.

Malaysia is often associated with Singapore, a fact which reduces the value of the former as compared to the latter. This makes Malaysia seem like an additional destination when tourists visit Singapore. However, this should not be the case. Aside from these, the city is also made busy by the many shopping centers present in the site. Apart from those already mentioned, Kuala Lumpur is undeniably known for the Petronas Twin Towers. Splendid views can be enjoyed by going to this tower. Kuala Lumpur is made accessible by the KL Monorail.

One of the reasons people travel is to try out new cuisine. As mentioned, there is an abundance of food stalls in Malaysia. The local cuisine of the country is notable for its mouth-watering flavors. Some of the must tries are the Chicken Satay, Nasi Lemak and a curry like meal called Beef Rendang.

Another must visit is the food capital of Malaysia by the name of Penang. There they serve the best variety of noodle soups and curry dishes. Tourists should not think twice about visiting the country.

Given its great diversity, Malaysians are well accustomed to getting along with people of different cultures and nationalities. This is one factor that contributed a lot to develop of their own culture and cuisine.

Though visiting Malaysia is not as cheap as visiting other Asian countries, tourists will definitely get more than what they paid for. Travel Hotspots In Cornwall And Devon

Cornwall is visited my millions of people each year. People flock here for holidays on the coast. But despite its popularity, Cornwall has a mystical quality thanks to its rugged, windswept landscape and rich heritage.

Tantalising Tintagel

It was a gentleman named Geoffrey of Monmouth who in 1150 started the legendary belief that the little town of Tintagel was the birthplace of the great King Arthur. This belief has been attached to Tintagel ever since, and indeed visitors still flock here still to catch a glimpse of the place where King Arthur may have been born.

The ruins of Tintagel Castle are quite spectacular set upon the steep cliffs overlooking the Atlantic ocean. It's believed that King Arthur was born here while Merlin stood famously in a cave beneath the castle. This is Merlins Cave and visitors can view it when the tide is not high.

Aside from these ancient remains Tintagel has a 14th Century Post Office that represents an interesting side-visit for travellers.

After you're done visiting the castle and post office, the town has a sleuth of tea rooms, pubs and souvenir shops to cater for the many visitors who come (mostly in summer).

Idyllic St Ives

This magical little corner of Cornwall offers wonderful, sandy beaches, narrow cobbled streets and a delightful harbour area an absolute joy for those wanting to discover the traditional, quaint Cornwall.

St Ives also has very strong historical ties to the arts community and testament to this can be found at the Barbara Hepworth Museum & Sculpture Garden. Just a few of the famous 20th century artists from St Ives include Barbara Hepworth, John Wells and Ben Nicholson. Those interested in art will also want to check out the Tate St Ives museum.

Art aside there's plenty for the general tourist too fine, sandy beaches and a myriad of wonderful shops and restaurants makes this a first class destination for those wanting to see the very best that Cornwall has to offer.

As you would expect, the good stretches of beach here makes it another popular location for surfers, Porthmeor being the pick of the bunch. Other good beaches in St Ives include Porthgwidden, Porth Kidney Sands, Windasea and Porthminster.

St Ives is a good base for a Cornwall holiday there are lots of accommodation options to suit the budgets of all holidaymakers.

Pretty Penzance

In South West Cornwall is the town of Penzance. Like St Ives, Penzance also has a reputation for having been an artists haven (in the 19th century) and still boasts many fine art galleries.

The climate in Penzance is wonderfully mild you'll see palm trees and other sub-tropical plant life in the beautiful Morrab Gardens (well worth a visit). It's also possible to catch views of St Michaels Mount from this busy harbour town.

There are some nice shops and restaurants near the harbour and some other points of interest in Penzance include the Penlee House Gallery & Museum and the Trinity House National Lighthouse Centre. Also worth a look is the interesting 19th century building that is Egyptian House.

There is no shortage of affordable lodging if you're looking to stay for a night or two in Penzance there are many bed & breakfasts offering a fair stay for reasonable fees or you could stay in one or two of the higher end places such as the Abbey hotel.

Some two miles from Penzance is the pretty village of Mousehole - Many believe it to be one of the most attractive fishing villages to be found anywhere in Cornwall. One of the famous (if eccentric) dishes that mousehole is famous for is "Stargazy Pie" a fish pie made with whole fish (and the heads sticking out of the pastry).

Also very close to Penzance is Newlyn a little town that (aside from being a pleasant fishing port) is known best for art. Newlyn started to be a hub for artists towards the late 18th century and it was a little later that the Newlyn School Of Art was opened.

Best Things To Do In Cornwall

Blessed with over 300 miles of stunning coastline with beaches, dunes and cliffs, Cornwall is famous as a seaside holiday destination. This gorgeous county has magnificent historic harbours, stunning rock formations and beautiful creeks surrounded by forest. A trip here inspires the senses.

A good way to enjoy this location is on foot. Cornwall really is a hiker's paradise. The South West Coast Path allows walking access to the cliff tops to some of the most remote corners of Cornwall.

For the culture vultures, the county has a great artistic heritage to discover plus a wealth of architecture to explore. There is also some fantastic nightlife to enjoy when the sun goes down on a day of sightseeing.

Cornwall's tourism is booming and it is not difficult too see why. There are so many visitor attractions and amazing activities to enjoy. From end-to-end, Cornwall has more tourism attractions than almost any other place on the United Kingdom.

Named by some as the 'eighth wonder of the world', the Eden Project is a stunning global garden contained within dome-like tropical biomes. This epic destination is home to a multitude of plant life, showcasing the complex biodiversity and mankind's ultimate reliance on nature.

The Eden Project is not just a tourist attraction though. It is also a centre for educational learning and the study of environmental conservation. There are programmes and workshops here for children and adults, who come here to learn all about a sustainable future.

In the biomes, visitors can discover the tropical plants that are used to produce everyday products and experience the sights and smells of the rainforest of the Amazon. This giant, indoor garden is a great place to walk around - but prepare to get weary, it is very hot here especially at the top of the path. Its a good job there are ice creams to be purchased at the bottom.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan is another major garden attraction in the South West. This elaborate garden remained hidden for centuries, until keen gardeners discovered it and regenerated the pants for future generations to enjoy.

There are some wonderful walks to discover at helicon, including forest trails, rhododendron alleys, wildlife ponds, rose gardens and greenhouses brimming with edible plant life.

No trip to Cornwall would be complete without a visit to Land's End. This place is the most south westerly part of mainland Britain, famous for its sheer cliffs, raging seas and abundance of birdlife. Its one of the most beautiful landmarks in the country where hundreds of thousands people flock every year to enjoy the scenery and serenity.

When at Lands End it is obligatory to pose for a picture at the famous Land's End signpost. This is where people celebrate after making the long walk or cycle from John OGroats at the other end of the British Isles in Scotland. There is a popular Land's End restaurant that is a scenic location to refuel and recharge the batteries. From here its a shot hop to Sennen or Penzance where you can hop on a boat for sea trip along the coast.

Own Tent Vs. Tent Rental In Camping Palamos

One of the hottest places for a quick summer getaway within the bounds of Europe is camping Palamos Spain. It has everything one would expect to find in a tropical paradise (except fresh coconuts of course). Apart from the crystal blue beaches, fine sand, and unlimited sunshine, the place is packed with must-try cafes and authentic Spanish restaurants, bars, resorts and cultural sites.

Camping Palamos, sometimes referred to as camping Costa Brava, also doesnt have a shortage of nature. Ten minutes from the cove is a rich pine forest with a trail where visitors may hike or bike on. And in the midst of it is a camping ground where tents and barbecue grills can be set up.

So with all the things to do, and thus the things to pack for a trip to Palamos, Spain, should a tent be one of them? Would it even be necessary when you can opt for Safari tent rental?

Transportation. The first thing to consider is your mode of transport from your country to Costa Brava. If youll be opting for a flight, luggage weight and size will be your determining factors. Youd want to save space for more important items or gear like a DSLR camera. Or rather, if youre on a tight budget, you may want to cut the luggage and go with a hand carry only.

Going to Costa Brava by car spares more space for more things, making a personal tent preferable. The question now is, would it even be worth bringing along?

Activities. The next thing to ask yourself is what you would be doing in Palamos. As mentioned earlier, there are lots of activities to try and places to explore. If youll be gone most of the day, and would only need a tent to sleep in at night, going for tent rental Spain might prove to be a bit costly. On the other hand, if youre on a holiday to simply relax under the sun and enjoy the soft whistle of the breeze through the towering pine trees, then going for tent rentals is wiser.

Safari Tent Rental Spain. Know that these tents arent mere tarps above your head. Safari tents are temporary set ups with home-like amenities. These come with a covered wooden porch, an equipped kitchen, and two bedrooms. Those with children, and groups with more than four people, can rent additional items like high chairs and extra mattresses to further their vacations convenience. In other words, there wont be much to worry about in terms of accommodation going for this option. Plus, you can proudly say you have been glamping Costa Brava.

Finally, when going for camping Palamos, dont forget to factor in your enjoyment and comfort. Consider bringing your own tent only when it doesnt get in the way of your vacation.

Zodiac boats are the best for whale watching since they are lower on the water and can take you to that hard-to-reach exotic location. Other remarkable options are glass bottom boats and submarines.

Fishing Escapades In Cornwall

There is a long list of activities that tourists can enjoy in Cornwall, which is why it is a top holiday destination. You will never get bored, for sure, and at the same time, you have the chance to try out things that you have never done before and have always wanted to experience at least once in your life, like fishing.

Bude is the top location for fishing in Cornwall if you want to do different kinds of fishing, whether fresh water or sea water. However, aside from all fish caught from the sea, fish caught in Bude should be released afterward. To understand the different kinds of fishing available for holidaymakers in Bude, here is a simple guide.

Coarse Fishing

This is normally done on a canal and is the safest option for anglers. It is also pretty easy to catch fish because it is well-stocked with many different species. You can easily catch bream, roach and carp, and might even sometimes catch a flounder or sea trout. Here you can try float fishing and using maggots and pellets as baits. Most of the carp are not very large, weighing between 2 and 5 lbs, but there are also older fishes that go over 20 lbs.

You might, however, need to start earlier during busy seasons to be able to fish peacefully, because otherwise, the canal tends to be full with other boats. To try out coarse fishing you would need a national rod license and a day ticket from the Bude Canal Angling Club. They are both easily found for sale next to the canal.

Sea Fishing

You can try fishing at the beach or on a chartered boat. There are many spots and just as many species you can try to catch. An advantage of sea fishing is that you do not need a license like you require when you go freshwater fishing.

Casting from the beach is highly popular in Bude Breakwater and Bude Harbour. You can find mackerel, school bass, Pollack and mullet here. On the other hand, thornback rays, bass and dogfish can be caught in Widemouth, Sandymouth, and Crooklets. If you want a more exciting experience, go for a boat fishing trip.

Fly fishing

Bude also has a lot of classic rivers and lakes in the vicinity, which gives guests the option for game fishing. The River Neet, for example, offers it for free. You can find some trout and mullet here. Another popular spot is the Upper Tamar, perfect for trout fishing, both the wild brown and sea types. To fish here, you would only need to pay 5 pounds a day.

River fishing is another option under the West country Angling Passport Scheme, which covers both Cornwall and North Devon. This allows you to go fly fishing at a highly affordable rate. Nearby lakes like the Simpson Valley Fishery have brown, rainbow, blue and tiger trout whole year round.

Whether you are a beginner or a regular fisher, Cornwall has exactly the type of fishing you are looking for. So planning your holiday in Bude will definitely satisfy the angler in you. Accommodation options in Bude, Cornwall are plentiful and include hotels, campsites and self-catering holiday homes where fishing enthusiasts and beginners are more than welcome to base themselves for a rememberable holiday.

Surfing Tips For Beginners When In Newquay, Cornwall

Because of its geography, Newquay has become the ideal spot for surfing in UK. People flock to the north coast of Cornwall with much enthusiasm for water adventures including surfing. While the place is absolutely perfect, the trip can be unsafe for beginners. Here are some tips for beginners:

Check the weather report
Sure, Newquay weather is generally ideal. But take precautions and check weather reports. Pay attention to humidity and temperature. There are occasions when surfers push too far and end up getting heat stroke.

Alongside weather reports are tidal reports. While tides are mischievous and unpredictable, check on wind velocity, if possible, to somehow foresee the currents.

Choose the right beach
There's a wide selection of beaches to surf in Newquay. It isn't called the surf capital in UK without a reason. Choose the right beach for your level.

If you're novice, Watergate Bay is great. The tides are mid-high and breaks are on both sides, ideal for safe yet equally powerful waves. Great Western is also suitable for beginners. Although this is less exposed compared to Tolcarne, the waves are consistent regardless of tidal ranges. Exercise caution though as there is a rock outcrop that casts danger as it becomes hidden during high tides.

Choose the right surf accommodation
There are loads of great holiday accommodation options in Newquay and Cornwall. It is important to have somewhere comfortable and affordable to stay when surfing as you will need your sleep. A lot of beginner surfers opt for campsites and cheap hostels but there are many great surfer hotels and self catering holiday apartments in Newquay.

Get to know the geography
Be familiar with rock formations, openings, and nearby rivers to avoid accidents. For instance, the Crantock Beach is also ideal for beginners because of consistent river break, especially under favourable conditions. But there are rips too dangerous for beginners to handle. Same goes for the South Fistral. The best technique here is to ask the locals. They know the terrain better than Google does.

Go for crowded or patrolled beaches
It's highly recommended to go to crowded and patrolled beaches. You may share waves with others, but at least somebody can assist you with your surfing needs. If accidents happen, there is immediate help. Going for crowded beaches also enables socialisation with other surfers, both experts and novices. You learn more tips from them.

Lusty Glaze can give you some serious swells although there are dangerous outcrops there. Many of the beaches in and around Newquay are patrolled by RNLI during the summer months.

Also popular among bodyboarders and beginner surfers is the Porth Beach. It picks up on awesome swells because of it's an exposed beach. However it's not ideal for high surf due to perilous rip currents.

Bring a first aid kit
Of course, this is important. You should be ready with medicines in case injuries happen. If you have asthma or hyperventilation history, then first aid is really a must.

Surf with others
When surfing for the first time, always go in groups. Surfing can be overwhelming, and you may forget about safety. Your buddies can be your look-out. And don't drink when surfing, whether in Newquay or in some other place.

How To Make The Best Out Of Your Caravan

Sometimes it can just be difficult to get the most out of your caravan. You may have gotten used to just using it for only the most specific days or events of the year, and then you forget about it for the rest of the time you have. However, even though this is something which you have probably been accustomed to, this should not be how things work forever. Regardless of the obstacle you face, you can always make more effective use of your caravan, even more compared with how you are using it today.

Here are just some of the most effective strategies you can take note of in order to make the most out of your caravan.

  • Get an electric caravan mover. Especially if you are going to Caravan parks in Wales where there is a lot of activity, it can be very difficult to store your caravan in some place accessible. Therefore, it would be best that you buy an electric caravan mover. An electric caravan mover is, however, not the cheapest thing in the world, but the things that it can do and the amount of effort that it can lessen on your behalf is something that you will really appreciate, so much even that you might forget the price.
  • Change your caravan TV. You can either install a satellite dish for your TV, or you can take things to a more convenient level and have a personal video recorder (PVR) and watch television through your tablet or your iPad. There are tablets available in the market which will allow you to access any television show you might want to watch for a low price.
  • Take your caravan to the city. Caravan parks in Wales are not just the ones you will find in the UK. In fact, there are caravan parks located even within the metro areas of the country, disproving the idea that caravan parks can only be found in rural parts of the UK. Instead of taking your caravan to the rural areas, why not try taking it to more urbanized locations where you can avoid high hotel bills and where you can bring the comforts of your home in the setting of an urban environment?
  • Take what you will need. There is a general idea among caravan owners that they should only take small items with them because of the limited space. However, although this is a good rule to follow, you do not have to slum it and just live off out of a few small supplies. Take everything that you will need and take it upon your shoulders to think of space saving ways to put those things on your caravan.
  • Take your kids or grandkids. Sure, there is not enough space for them to sleep inside the caravan, but they will surely enjoy the independence that a tent will give. Nothing will beat the experience of tagging your kids or grandkids along in a great adventure, possibly in caravan parks in Wales or in other parts of the country.
