Car Camping Guide | T+L Family

Parks and private campgrounds across the country have drive-in sites, and many are equipped with water spigots, picnic tables, barbecue pits, even electric hookups. Lakes and trailheads are steps away. Simply park, pitch, and toss your sleeping bags inside your tent. The car serves as a secure storage unit as you explore the wilderness. If you run out of milk or someone comes down with an earache in the middle of the night, you can get back to civilization—pronto. In the morning, fire up a propane stove and whip up the hot cocoa and oatmeal—or pile into the car and head to the nearest pancake house. Where to Go

Many public campgrounds are on lakes or in mountains; private ones sometimes make up for less spectacular scenery with niceties, such as pools, mini golf, go carts, and hayrides. Overnight fees range from a couple of bucks to around $40 for a family of four. Reserve well in advance if you’re camping in peak season, and expect company. Some private outfits, like KOA, really pack ’em in—a boon for kids who like to make friends on vacation, but sometimes a disappointment for those who want to get away from it all. Be prepared, too, for RVs and trailers as neighbors (drive-in campgrounds were designed with them in mind). Request a spot in the back forty for maximum peace and privacy. When you’re all snuggled in for the night, crickets will sing you to sleep. Lists campgrounds at national parks and on other federal lands. Lets you line up spots at public and private campgrounds. Details its 450 campgrounds, all with pools and playgrounds, and some with WiFi. Keep this in Mind if You’re Sleeping Outside

Size up when buying a tent: Choose a six-person for a family of four.

A dome tent gives you more head room; straight-walled tents have more shoulder room.

Set the tent on a ground cloth one inch shorter than its perimeter.

For kids, choose an all-synthetic bag that’s good to 40 degrees(fine for summer). A rectangular bag with a full-length zipper can be opened and used as a group coverlet.

Keep flaps open as much as possible for ventilation; your warmth comes from the sleeping bag. A self-inflating foam core pad will be less clammy than an air mattress.

Some state parks no longer allow you to build open fires, says Jamie Abish of New York’s family-owned Tent & Trails (, an outdoor clothing and equipment store. If regulations put the kibosh on your barbecue, a simple propane-fueled camp stove won’t cramp your hot-dogs- and marshmallows-on-sticks routine, and is a godsend for mornings when you want to boil water for coffee—fast.

Freeze hot dogs and sausages at home and pack them in the cooler while still frozen. By the time you’re ready to cook the next night they’ll have thawed some but will still be safe to eat.

Use space-saving Ziploc bags for everything from soap and dish sponges to the brown sugar and raisins for sprinkling on oatmeal.

Stringing up a tarp near your tent will give your gang a place to hang out when it rains.

Tie nylon rope between two trees and use as it a clothesline for wet towels and swimsuits.

For night exploring, use a headlamp instead of a flashlight.

Go camping with another family, or let your kids bring a friend or two. Share the chores—and the adventure.

Did You Ever Want To Learn To Play An Instrument?

Most people either didnât want to learn to play one or in some cases like mine, were forced to learn to play an instrument they thought was useless. Today of course there are much friendlier options for kids to learn how to play an instrument. One of the absolute best options has to be learning from free online programs conducted by public libraries. One I have found and have used myself is from Lorain Public Library System from Cleveland Ohio. Now I donât live within 7000 miles of Cleveland but I can still use this system. My goal here is to provide you some insight into this topic and if you are looking for more in-depth information you can click here. Letâs continue our discussion, shall we?

In my teenage years my school decided we had to learn to play an instrument, and of course everyone wanted a guitar or saxophone, I got handed a flute, and had no idea what it was when it was handed to me. I did learn about the flute, mostly that I couldnât play the thing. At the time I hated every single minute that I was forced to try and learn how to play it. As you can gather I never did learn and to be brutal about it now, with the attitude I had then they were wasting their time and mine.

The Lorain public library system offers a program called ArtistWorks to to anyone who wants to study. It is a video-based art and music instruction program that is made by Recorded Books. Recorded Books say they are the largest independent publisher of audio books, and they are also the largest provider of digital media to the market. The library has teamed up with them to provide clients with readily available downloadable and streamable material. The material is available from Internet enabled browsers, that means you donât need any kind of app or software to view the material.

The material is also available for viewing on all these devices, desktops, laptops, tablets and smart phones. The sheer number of instruments and music genres available through this program is staggering considering that the beginner level courses and the intermediate level courses are all free.

The beauty of doing courses from an online source is that the instruction is available to you 24/7 as long as you have access to the Internet. You can however also download upcoming lessons so that you donât need the Internet access. I have never tried this so I donât know how it works but I would guess you would not be able to download more than one or two future lessons. These courses are progressive in nature so that kind of system would make sense.

As well is teaching instruments, you can also learn other things using this type of course structure from this provider. You can learn how to sing properly or if you want to you can learn how to paint or draw. To get a full listing of the courses that ArtistWorks has available you would have to go to their website because even the Lorain Library does not provide all of the courses available, they do however say that you can find where a course is available from the providerâs website.

How To Undertake Online Gospel Piano Lessons

One thing you will agree with me is that gospel music continues to gain a lot of popularity in the modern world. Gospel performance is one of the most satisfying styles of music to learn to play as it creates a lot of room for devotion and passion. You can learn a lot about gospel music if you follow this link. You can go through these few tips if you want to grasp online gospel lessons with a lot of ease. You will learn to play several gospel songs within a very short time.

It is important to realize that gospel piano music is played in two major styles before you begin your online lessons. These include the accompaniment style and the congregational style. This information is according to the site. The congregational style is the one you play most often as the group or congregation sings the music. You can also use this style when you are singing yourself as you play the piano. You have to learn to play the melody as the singing goes on. Most gospel piano lessons adapt this style of music.

You have to play the chords, octaves, and single notes of the melodies using your right hand. The right hand will always mimic how the singing is taking place because it is playing the melody. You can sing in your head or sing out loud as you practice the right hand to make sure that you are playing the rhythms and notes correctly. You should always play the bass notes using the left hand. The bass note is usually an octave or a single note. It can also be one of the gospel piano chords to play.

There is a small difference between the accompaniment style and the congregational one. You can also learn this style in your online gospel piano classes. The piano does not play a complete melody because the piano accompanies a singer who will be the only person providing the melody. The left hand has to play the bass throughout the performance. The main function of the right hand is to play the appropriate gospel piano chords during the singing. The most important thing to note is that you should play the chords in the middle or lower octave. The singer can use a higher octave and become the focus of the song.

You should always think of the style you wish to play before you enroll for online piano lessons. You should not over rely on your instructor to provide direction on the best style to learn. You need to understand on whether you want to put more focus on the singer or the piano. You also need to understand the person that will be playing the melody. You will get the best out of the gospel piano online lessons once you understand all the above aspects. There is no need to waste your precious time if you are not sure of what you want.

Surfing Tips For Beginners When In Newquay, Cornwall

Because of its geography, Newquay has become the ideal spot for surfing in UK. People flock to the north coast of Cornwall with much enthusiasm for water adventures including surfing. While the place is absolutely perfect, the trip can be unsafe for beginners. Here are some tips for beginners:

Check the weather report
Sure, Newquay weather is generally ideal. But take precautions and check weather reports. Pay attention to humidity and temperature. There are occasions when surfers push too far and end up getting heat stroke.

Alongside weather reports are tidal reports. While tides are mischievous and unpredictable, check on wind velocity, if possible, to somehow foresee the currents.

Choose the right beach
There's a wide selection of beaches to surf in Newquay. It isn't called the surf capital in UK without a reason. Choose the right beach for your level.

If you're novice, Watergate Bay is great. The tides are mid-high and breaks are on both sides, ideal for safe yet equally powerful waves. Great Western is also suitable for beginners. Although this is less exposed compared to Tolcarne, the waves are consistent regardless of tidal ranges. Exercise caution though as there is a rock outcrop that casts danger as it becomes hidden during high tides.

Choose the right surf accommodation
There are loads of great holiday accommodation options in Newquay and Cornwall. It is important to have somewhere comfortable and affordable to stay when surfing as you will need your sleep. A lot of beginner surfers opt for campsites and cheap hostels but there are many great surfer hotels and self catering holiday apartments in Newquay.

Get to know the geography
Be familiar with rock formations, openings, and nearby rivers to avoid accidents. For instance, the Crantock Beach is also ideal for beginners because of consistent river break, especially under favourable conditions. But there are rips too dangerous for beginners to handle. Same goes for the South Fistral. The best technique here is to ask the locals. They know the terrain better than Google does.

Go for crowded or patrolled beaches
It's highly recommended to go to crowded and patrolled beaches. You may share waves with others, but at least somebody can assist you with your surfing needs. If accidents happen, there is immediate help. Going for crowded beaches also enables socialisation with other surfers, both experts and novices. You learn more tips from them.

Lusty Glaze can give you some serious swells although there are dangerous outcrops there. Many of the beaches in and around Newquay are patrolled by RNLI during the summer months.

Also popular among bodyboarders and beginner surfers is the Porth Beach. It picks up on awesome swells because of it's an exposed beach. However it's not ideal for high surf due to perilous rip currents.

Bring a first aid kit
Of course, this is important. You should be ready with medicines in case injuries happen. If you have asthma or hyperventilation history, then first aid is really a must.

Surf with others
When surfing for the first time, always go in groups. Surfing can be overwhelming, and you may forget about safety. Your buddies can be your look-out. And don't drink when surfing, whether in Newquay or in some other place.

Outdoor Camping Tips

Backpacking tents traditionally used space-efficient designs that had steeply sloped walls, narrow foot spaces and low headroom. This helped keep the weight lower, but the tradeoff was comfort.

Newer tent designs aim to open up interiors without adding unwanted weight. Other key features that affect livability include number and location of doors, protected exterior spaces and ventilation. campingtentsforsale

Interior volume: To assess tent volume, visit a store, ask to set up a tent and hop inside. If shopping online, study the pitch of its walls. If the walls angle steeply toward the tent's ceiling, you're probably looking at a weight-efficient tent (great!) that offers only modest interior volume (the tradeoff).

The following can also help you size up a tents interior space and overall livability:

Floor dimensions (floor plan): Length and width measurements offer a rough idea of floor size. Many tents dont have perfectly rectangular floors, so you might see dimensions like 85 x 51/43 (L x W head/foot). A tapered floor provides needed room for shoulders and arms, while also saving weight by having a narrower foot.

Floor area: This number indicates total square footage of floor-level space. While helpful for comparison between tents, this number alone wont tell you how efficiently the space is laid out.

side view of tent Peak height: Generally, a greater peak height indicates a roomier interior. Peak height, though, is measured at a single spot inside a tent, so it still cant tell you how livable a tent is.

side view of tent Wall shape: This is an even bigger factor in head and shoulder roomand overall tent livabilitythan peak height. The more vertical the walls, the more "livable" space can be found inside a tent.

Tent Rainfly Rainfly color: Light, bright fly colors transmit more light inside, making the interior brighter. That will make a tent feel more spacious and make it a more pleasant place to be if a storm keeps you tentbound for an extended time.

Doors: Tent designers focus on door shape, zippers and other adjustments, but the most important question is: How many? Its nice when every sleeper has a door. Choosing a multiperson tent with a single door, though, cuts weight and cost.

Vestibules. These rainfly extensions offer sheltered storage for boots and other gear. An oversized floor area would offer the same advantage, but it would also create a heavier tent. Most tents have vestibules and their size is included in the specs. Bigger is better, but cavernous vestibules can add weight and cost.

Tent Rainfly Ventilation: You exhale moisture as you sleep, so your tent needs features that prevent condensation buildup. Thus you want mesh windows or panels, along with zip panels to close over them when too much cold air creeps in. Some tents have rainfly vents that can be opened or closed. Rainfly adjustability is essential, both for ventilation and for gazing at stars or witnessing the sunrise.

Tent Setup: Before heading out to the wilderness, set up your tent at home the first time. A freestanding tent means the tent can stand without the use of stakes, which speeds setup and makes a tent easy to repositionjust lift and move it to a new spot. Most tents are freestanding for this reason, though non-freestanding tents can be lighter because the pole structure doesnt have to be as robust.

Additional tent setup features:

Tent Pole Hub Pole hubs: The beauty of hubs is that they take the guesswork out of assembly. You take the folded pole sections out of the bag and unfurl the skeleton, seating segments as you go. Smaller cross poles might be separate from the hub, but those are easily identified after the main pole assembly is complete. The other major benefit of hubs is that they increase a tents strength and stability.

Tent Clips Pole clips: Poles connect to tent canopies via clips, sleeves or a combination of the two. Pole sleeves fabric tension provides a stronger pitch, but threading poles through them can be a challenge. Pole clips are lighter and easier to attach. They also allow more airflow underneath the rainfly, which reduces condensation.

Color Coded corners Color coding: This helps you quickly orient each pole tip to the correct tent corner and helps you find which sleeves or clips go with which pole sections.

Backpacking tents use high-strength, low-weight aluminum poles. Over the years aluminum poles have maintained strength while engineers have reduced weight by incrementally shrinking diameter and wall thickness. You often see DAC (Dongah Aluminum Corp.) in specs because this company is the worlds pre-eminent pole maker. You might also see a 6,000-series or a slightly stronger 7,000-series aluminum listed.

Tent fabrics and denier: A wide range of specialized nylons and polyesters are used in tents and, like poles, the technology evolves rapidly. One spec you might see, regardless of fabric, is denier (D), the fabric yarns weight (in grams) based on a 9,000-meter length of the yarn. Higher numbers indicate more rugged fabrics, while lower deniers are found in more lightweightand less durablefabrics. Dont compare denier unless fabrics are identical, though, becau

se you wont be accounting for inherent differences in fabric properties.

Tip: If you feel compelled to delve into specs, focus on the poles. The strongest tents will likely have top-grade poles in a hubbed pole set. Or simply look at the seasonal rating, because thats influenced by the strength of the poles and fabrics in a tent. Material weights, of both the poles and the fabrics, will be reflected by the minimum weight for the overall tent.

A personalized tent camping checklist is a handy tool for novice campers to get an idea of what basic equipment is necessary to enjoy tent camping.

It is also useful for seasoned campers to ensure that important camping gear does not get left behind.

This list is both an organizing and a brainstorming tool. Campers will want to customize it to their own situation and personal preferences. Feel free to create your own, selecting items from the list below and adding new ones.

Essential Factors To Consider When Buying Fishing Boat

Are you interested in purchasing one of the many fishing boats available on the market now? If so, it is important you know certain factors that must be considered in order to select the perfect fishing boat. Nowadays, fishing has become more than just a recreational activity, a hobby, or even a sport. Today, many anglers no longer throw fishing line from a dock or a pier. Instead, they do so from a small boat. It is a fact that these boats provide a high level of versatility and functionality. With these boats, you can reach isolated fishing spots that typically have a large number of fish. Boats also provide you an enjoyable day on the water. However, if you want to make the most of fifishing boatsshing boat, it is important to consider some factors. Consider fish type If you are going to buy small boats, it is vital to consider the type of fish that you want to catch. Some fishermen prefer to find certain types. Perhaps, they want to catch them for sale. Likewise, some fishermen may want certain types to include in their freezers for meals for their families. This will have a bearing on the kind of boat you choose to buy. For example, if your interest is to catch bass, you may go for a bass boat. If your interest is to catch fish that are in the salt water, you may want to buy a boat that is known as "Center Console." However, if you are not interested in catching a particular type of fish, then you can go for a basic boat or all purpose boat, Available platform Another important factor that should be considered when shopping for small fishing boats is the type of platform the boat has. When fishing, it is considered ideal to have a relatively stable platform. Having a stable platform will provide you with the stability that you need to move smoothly and also the stability to maneuver the fish you caught safely without fear of falling off the boat or tipping the boat over. So, it is important to consider the platform when it comes to small boats buying because they have a reputation for lacking overall stability. Some boats are considered to be highly stable and safe, and these include the small pontoon boats as well as small boats that include a built-in electric. If you consider the factors above, you are not likely to buy a boat you will later regret buying.

Garden Climbing Frames For Kids

Kids today are prone to obesity. It may be the food - junk food, fast food - or the lack of exercise. If you want your kids to become lean and healthy, you must give them good nutrition. You must also encourage them to play outdoors.

Playing with garden climbing frames is one sure way for kids to realize that outdoor activity is fun. It is a healthy, wholesome, and fun way to exercise. It is not surprising why garden climbing frames are getting to be one of the most popular outdoor toys today.

Garden climbing frames provide a wide range of interesting activities for children. Some models are equipped with kiddies slides, trampoline, and swings to ensure long hours of enjoyment and fun for your kids.

You can choose from several types of garden climbing frames. Make sure to take into account the type that will suit your kids personal preference, as well as your budget. You can opt for the basic climb 'n' slide model. You can also choose to get a fully equipped play hub that includes nets, swings, and ropes. You can even have one custom-made for your child. All frames generally include slides since kids, especially the really young ones, usually find it challenging to climb down after they reach the top of the frame.

Your girls are likely to swoon over outdoor climbing frames designed to look like a villa or a castle. They will enjoy playing house in these intricately designed, two-storied frames. Frames of this type usually come with elaborate woodwork and delicate pastel colors that are so appealing to little girls.

Your boys are likely to want something more adventurous or sporty in style. They are certain to be fascinated by a climbing frame with a pirate-themed design.

If you have a toddler, you can easily find one especially crafted for kids his or her age. A frame of this kind is generally much smaller in size. It is likely to be manufactured from plastic and feature bright sunny colors like yellow, red, green, and blue which are attractive to kids. These petite and compact frames are usually easy to assemble. You will also find it easy to dismantle them if the need arises.

What are the factors you should consider when choosing an outdoor climbing frame for your home?

Safety is of primary consideration for outdoor play equipment. Toy manufacturers are generally mindful of the importance of safety. However, you are ultimately responsible for seeing to it that the style you get is the safest one for your kid.

Make sure that you get a garden climbing frame that is made of durable metal or wood. Read the instructions on the manual carefully before you assemble the frame. You may need to anchor the frame to the ground using concrete, this will ensure the frame's stability.

When selecting toys, including garden climbing frames, it is better to choose one which has only a few big parts. Stay away from toys which have a lot of tiny parts. These pose some safety hazards to children. Younger kids who play with or test the parts without supervision may inadvertently put the parts in their mouths and choke on them.

It is a good idea to talk to other family members or friends, especially those who have children of their own. Solicit their thoughts and advice. Consult with your own children as well. They will be the ones to play with the frame, after all. It is also prudent to visit some playground equipment suppliers and toy stores. Look at the options available. If possible, have your children try out the different models to test for hardiness of construction, workmanship, and appeal.

How To Make The Best Out Of Your Caravan

Sometimes it can just be difficult to get the most out of your caravan. You may have gotten used to just using it for only the most specific days or events of the year, and then you forget about it for the rest of the time you have. However, even though this is something which you have probably been accustomed to, this should not be how things work forever. Regardless of the obstacle you face, you can always make more effective use of your caravan, even more compared with how you are using it today.

Here are just some of the most effective strategies you can take note of in order to make the most out of your caravan.

  • Get an electric caravan mover. Especially if you are going to Caravan parks in Wales where there is a lot of activity, it can be very difficult to store your caravan in some place accessible. Therefore, it would be best that you buy an electric caravan mover. An electric caravan mover is, however, not the cheapest thing in the world, but the things that it can do and the amount of effort that it can lessen on your behalf is something that you will really appreciate, so much even that you might forget the price.
  • Change your caravan TV. You can either install a satellite dish for your TV, or you can take things to a more convenient level and have a personal video recorder (PVR) and watch television through your tablet or your iPad. There are tablets available in the market which will allow you to access any television show you might want to watch for a low price.
  • Take your caravan to the city. Caravan parks in Wales are not just the ones you will find in the UK. In fact, there are caravan parks located even within the metro areas of the country, disproving the idea that caravan parks can only be found in rural parts of the UK. Instead of taking your caravan to the rural areas, why not try taking it to more urbanized locations where you can avoid high hotel bills and where you can bring the comforts of your home in the setting of an urban environment?
  • Take what you will need. There is a general idea among caravan owners that they should only take small items with them because of the limited space. However, although this is a good rule to follow, you do not have to slum it and just live off out of a few small supplies. Take everything that you will need and take it upon your shoulders to think of space saving ways to put those things on your caravan.
  • Take your kids or grandkids. Sure, there is not enough space for them to sleep inside the caravan, but they will surely enjoy the independence that a tent will give. Nothing will beat the experience of tagging your kids or grandkids along in a great adventure, possibly in caravan parks in Wales or in other parts of the country.

Why Pacific Parrotlets Are Such Great Alternatives To Large Parrots

Owning parrots as pets has been popular for hundreds of years due to their bold personalities and beautiful colors. However, since many of the larger species can be quite loud, screaming, screeching, and shouting to get attention, they have gotten a bad reputation as being unneighborly and hard to control. Most of the larger birds also chew on everything making them difficult to allow to roam inside the house. There are some other species that are much easier to raise, almost never noisy, but still have that great personality that most people are looking for. These are called the Pacific Parrotlets, a smaller yet still beautiful parrot that you're sure to love.

It's Best To Buy Them As 2 Week Old Babies

There are several reasons why this is done, first of all, the mother birds lay more than 4 eggs at a time but can really only care for 2 or 3 babies adequately. This leaves several of the later born babies to die due to neglect. By taking the oldest siblings from the nest, the mother will turn to the younger babies and care for them instead.

The other important factor is that baby Pacific Parrotlets have their eyes closed up until about 2 1/2 weeks old, then they tend to bond with the first thing they see as they open. If they bond with their mother, they'll be afraid of humans as a natural instinct. However, if they bond with their human owners, they'll be friendlier, easier to train, and lack any basic fears that they instinctually should have had.

Once You Get Your Parrotlets Home They'll Need Plenty Of Care

From age 2 weeks to about 8 weeks your new baby will need to be fed about every 4 hours or so. There is a special Parrotlet formula that you can buy at the pet store that supplies all of the nutrients that it will need to thrive and grow.

You'll want to mix the formula in slightly larger batches so that it maintains its warmer temperature until you have fed the baby all that it desires. At about 8 or 9 weeks the bird will begin refusing the formula more often and that's an indication that it's time to start feeding it solid foods. They love thawed frozen mixed vegetables, fruits, and nuts to start with, but there are many other foods they love as well.

You should avoid feeding the birds foods with high salt content, avocados, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol or most processed foods that are bad for humans too. They should always have plenty of fresh water to drink, and it should be changed regularly.

Parrotlets Don't Need Constant Interaction With Their Humans

Larger parrots need to be played with daily or they'll scream and yell constantly for attention. Pacific Parrotlets will play on their own more often, especially if they have a large cage and some toys to entertain themselves.

If you've always wanted find and purchase a parrotlet bird for sale but were annoyed at some of the antics of the larger parrots, then you'll surely fall in love with the Parrotlets. For the most part the different names of the birds come from their colors, so the Pacific is blue of course. They make great pets and can keep you company for hours per day with their playful antics.

Piano Blues

It was the guitar that became the single instrument to represent the roots of blues for simple reasons to understand. Firstly, if you were broke, you could make one and this was very common in the post slavery days in the Mississippi delta. These instruments often didn't really look like a guitar, and they didn't have 6 strings, but they made music and served a purpose. Difficult to tune, they were often played with a knife or slide (bottleneck). Secondly, whatever kind of guitar you had, either bought or made, they are very portable - try and pick up a piano to take to your next gig!

In those days, it was very rare for a young black man to have a piano at home. Compared to a poor man's wages, a piano was incredibly expensive. So how did people learn? Mostly, by listening and hearing piano players in public place or honky-tonk music joints. Sometimes it was possible to sneak in during the day and play a little, if the owner allowed it, but it must have been very tough to get started. If you were very lucky indeed, and your family could afford it, then private piano lessons could be the answer. Even so, if you didn't have a piano at home then practice time was a problem. A common way out of this problem was to seek work as a pianist in a bar or juke-joint.

Brothels were noisy and seedy places with a feel all of their own. The lovely atmosphere and the mood of the punters were helped along by a pianist playing a form of blues called 'stride'. Stride piano was a form of boogie woogie, a variation on the basic blues them and popular at the time. The bass, or left hand, pattern could be either simple or very complex, but always with a rhythmic 'bum-chick' feel to it. The right hand generally played the higher half of the keys and created a stunning and appealing mixture of sounds that made the feet tap. UK based Jim Bruce is just one instructor that teaches this technique.

Scott Joplin was a famous performer who made his living by playing in a brothel, sometimes playing for hours non-stop - a great way to try out new ideas. If you had a small repertoire, then the tendency was to extend the piece, playing it and repeating it many times over. To do this successfully, it was necessary to add variations each time so that it didn't sound boring. Joplin was extremely successful at this, combining stride and boogie with his classical training to produce a particular style of music called ragtime.

The Roots Of Acoustic Blues Guitar - Bottleneck And Open G Tuning

Before it was possible to buy a factory made guitar, poor people in the Mississippi Delta often made their own instruments, which might have had any number of strings. Certain factors had a huge impact on instrument tuning and also how these rudimentary guitars were played, namely the weather and the guitar build quality.

The first tuning pegs were made from wood and were carved as a tapered push-fit into the head stock. There were no gears and the gut strings were just wound around the peg. When the string was at the right pitch, the peg was simply pushed harder into it's seating and friction held it in place. Unfortunately, the humid and hot conditions often caused the pegs to slip, and also affected the tension of the string material, of course changing the pitch.

When 6 string guitars became available, they were not the highest quality and even small differences in tuning were very evident when using standard chord progressions. It was soon discovered that by tuning the guitar to an open tuning, where placing the finger, or a knife edge, across any fret would produce a chord, it was much easier to create simple tunes particularly suited to the repetitive blues songs common at the time.

Even so, many guitars were very difficult to fret as the necks were often a little warped and the action (the distance between the fret board and the strings) were too high. It was found that by resting a knife edge or broken bottle neck across the frets and moving it up and down, a very pleasing and plaintive sound resulted. Bottleneck, or slide, blues was born and became synonymous with Mississippi Delta Blues. Such names as Son House, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson perfected the style and delivered powerful emotional examples of this fine way of playing roots music.

Open G tuning is actually one of the simplest to implement. The bass E is tuned down to D, the next bass string A is tuned down to G and the high E is tuned down to D also. This gives an overall tuning of D,G,D,G,B and D. For me, it's got the advantage over other tunings such as open D because only three strings are altered, so it's very easy to get into and out of! Most guitarists don't even need to use a tuner - when the guitar is tuned right it just sounds right, so it's very intuitive.

Using a bottleneck itself is quite an art. Paradoxically, it's very easy to learn the basics and it can be done in 20 minutes. However, many months are normally required to perfect the delicate control need to produce the best blues sounds. As the slide moves up or down the fret board, the player searches for the right note and as he moves closer, oscillates his finger so that a vibrato results. Not only does this sound great, but it also gives some extra leeway for finding just the right position for the bottleneck to produce the desired effect.
